I still love this version and still wonder who’s playing the bass there – even with three guitars in focus, the song would be boring without the great bass fundamentals.

If you don’t know the original, you really should give Strictly Commcercial a try – packed with rather easy-listening songs, compared to stuff like Lumpy Grave…

Unterhalb der Kontrollen für das aktuelle Stück lassen sich noch weitere sieben Songs auswählen. Bild geht, Audioqualität ist erfreulich gut. Vermittelt schon einen sehr guten Eindruck, wie SGM live klingt. Und aussieht.

Now again I’m addicted to one band I heard on chronix a few times, called “RA”. There seems to be only one album ever released, “From One”, and I haven’t seen it yet for an acceptable price at the usual shops. And of course the Saturn here in Cologne, calling itself the biggest CD-shop in the world, didn’t have it either. I’d appreciate any hints for shops to look for that album.

Well, as I can’t say much more about RA, back to Nonpoint – Statment:

The first song, “Mindtrip”, was rather difficult to get used to. Of course that isn’t necessarily bad, the music that is rather hard to get used to is often the one you enjoy the longest. I’m bad at describing musical styles: It’s somewhere around NuMetal; h-blockx, Rage Against The Machine and The Mars Volta come to my mind. The latter mostly because of the longest track, “DoubleStakked”. A great and dynamic composition. There is one point in the middle that gets me angry again and again about playing in three bands without a (male) singer, or none at all (in two cases).

More often then not I don’t take notice of content of the lyrics, therefore I can’t say what its all about. With one exception, “Orgullo”, all lyrics are in english.

The only song from “Statement” I found on youtube in an acceptable quality is “Endure”, definitely one of my favorites. It features one speciality of Nonpoint: Extreme strechtes (dunno if that is the right word) of single words or even syllables. Like in the refrain with “enduuuuuurrreeeeeee”. Something like that.

Of course everything has it’s dark side, in this case an ugly cover of “In The Air Tonight“, promoted as part of the score of one of the worst movies ever, “Miami Vice”. Don’t watch that movie, ever! Shave your teeth instead, that is less boring!

Im groben deckt sich der Verlauf mit Udo’s Beschreibung. Clem Snide konnte ich ebenfalls nicht viel abgewinnen. Währenddessen unterhielt ich mich mit einem ehemaligen Kollegen: Dieser hatte Clem Snide bereits vor einem Jahr als Einheitzer für Ben Folds gesehen, und da war er wohl wesentlich unterhaltsamer. Witzig war immerhin das letzte Stück, bei dem er von seinen Roadies am Flügel, Schlagzeug und Bass begleitet wurde. Zum Glück war die Technik wesentlich besser als die Künste der Roadies an ihren Instrumenten: Der Sounds war während des ganzen Konzerts ausgezeichnet.

Ohne jeglichen Umbau kamen nach sehr kurzer Unterbrechung Ben Folds mit Band, in Form des Schlagzeugers Sam und ununterbrochen Kaugummi-kauenden Bassisten Harry auf die Bühne.

Wie bei jedem einzelnen Stück gelang auch bei der Gesamtzusammenstellung eine grandiose Dynamik: Los ging es mit rockigen Songs, die ich mangels Vorkenntnissen nicht benennen kann, gelegentlich unterbrochen von kleineren, extrem unterhaltsamen Jam-Einlagen: “We bought this synthesizer, for about 1000 Dollars. But we forgot to buy a stand for it. *düdeldedüledüdeldü*”. Mit am Start war auch die “brown note”: “This will make you shit your pants! Well, I never actually saw someone shit their pants, …. anyway…”.

Höhepunkt dieses erstens Teils war dann “Bitches Ain’t Shit”, das ich immerhin aus ein paar Live-Aufnahmen auf You Tube kannte, z.B. vom My Space Gig.

Danach folgten dann drei bis fünf Solo-Stücke, die ich aufgrund der schlechten, völlig verrauchten Luft (“fucking smoke!”) nicht wirklich genießen konnte. Während ich halb mit dem Gedanken spielte, rauszugehen und Luft zu schnappen, oder im Stehen einzuschlafen, ging es dann aber auch schon weiter: Keine Ahnung welche Nummer das war, aber auf jeden Fall die lauteste das Ganzen Abend, das ging schon gut zur Sache.

Im weiteren folgten dann noch reichlich rockige Stücke, mir fällt grad nur “Army” als Titel ein, inklusive zwei tollen Zugaben. Das Publikum war zwar nicht so richtig laut, aber die Stimmung war trotzdem sehr gut.

Mit den Auftritten von Spock’s Beard mit Neal Morse, die ich leider nur von DVD kenne, hatte dieses Konzert mindestens eines gemeinsam: Man merkte den Musikern, vor allem Ben Folds bzw. Neal Morse, den Spaß an der Musik an, und dieser überträgt sich dann auch schnell auf den Zuschauer.

Ich kann nur jedem empfehlen, sich die nächste Tour nicht entgehen zu lassen!
